Can the Master Potter work in Megan’s heart and save her marriage?

Megan and Wes have the perfect marriage. Or at least, they did until when Wes began working longer hours and she became irritable and needy.

If only she hadn’t committed to leading a spiritual disciplines course in her women’s group at church. How can she lead when God seems so far away, and her spirit, so dry?

But she’s good at leading. She can do this. She can pretend everything’s fine. So long as the women don’t see through her façade and into her soul…

Wes is doing his best for his family. He’s working long hours, but it’s only for a season.

Why can’t Megan see that?

Will their marriage survive when Megan seems so ambivalent? How has this happened when they’re the model couple at church? It doesn’t seem possible.

Well written and powerful in content. I love how this story is focused on 4 ladies, Megan and the 3 ladies taking her spiritual disciplines class as they take this journey together to grow spiritually. In fact as a reader we are given a front row seat to the group and how God uses this course to work powerfully in their lives. At the beginning, each one is holding back from being fully vulnerable but God begins to work in their lives. I love how each ladies journey is just a little different and yet beautiful in its own right. In this way, the book itself ministers to a broader range of women. I personally could see myself in Megan.

I ended the book with a desire to learn more about the spiritual disciplines that were mentioned within. I was secretly hoping there would be an appendix with just that. But there wasn’t. But the author does make mention that the reader could google for more information.

Juliette weaves her Christian message so masterfully in her story that there is no feeling of being preached at. (She writes better sentences than I do too!) This story is about four women in different situations and their journey to a closer walk with God. I think reading this book has been a very good Bible study for me. Thank you, Juliette.

I enjoyed this book for the most part. I was surprised that the author was able to make a story from four women's perspective work. Because it was in third-person, there were a few times I was confused whose head we were in. Most of the chapters were labeled for one woman each chapter, except for the last. I actually enjoyed getting to know all four women. I related to Megan most, but the other three were also relatable. I liked how seamlessly the weeks passed by focusing on one woman at a time.

I also absolutely loved the faith thread! I've been wanting more Christian fiction like this, where the characters' faith impacts their everyday lives, and we get to see their prayers, fears, and spiritual struggles.

It was also interesting to learn about some of these spiritual disciples that I've never heard of before. Apparently, this is from a denomination that I've never even visited. Some of them sounded a bit mystical, but as I'm reading a nonfiction book that talks about some of these meditation methods, I would like to learn more.

The only things I didn't like were:
1- that I never knew where Coral Bay was. Because the only other place mentioned was California, I thought maybe it was near there. But it wasn't until the Epilogue that I finally realized that this was set in Australia. Because I was under the impression that this was taking place in the States, the few British/ Australian phrases jumped out at me and pulled me out of the story.
2- I didn't like how the Epilogue didn't actually mention God. After all the beautiful Scriptures and spiritual journeys, I was disappointed that the One whom Megan's faith was in, the object of her faith, wasn't actually mentioned.

But on the whole, a very rewarding read, and one I recommend.

    Favorite quotes:
“She wondered if she wasn't having some kind of early mid-life crisis” (chapter 1). I did.

“Isn't that what mothers did? Lifted their chins and carried on?” (chapter 1)

“She wondered if she'd done the right thing. There'd be no getting out of the course now.” (chapter 1)

“She had to confess that it wasn't God she was hiding from so much as herself.” (chapter 2)

“Perhaps they all had their own ways of hiding, Megan reflected.” (chapter 2)

“Yet in some ways, her seemingly perfect life was no more than a mirage, too.” (chapter 2)

“Whatever was going on with her, she could get through it. She had to. Oblivious, Wes snored on.” (chapter 2)

“An inner voice told her that wasn't the way forward. She knew that; she just didn't want to face it.” (chapter 3)

“She wondered who she was if she wasn't 'Mummy'? Was there anything of Megan left?” (chapter 6)

“Although she listed the things that she was grateful for, it had been hard to actually muster up that feeling.” (chapter 9)

“A deep and honest look at one's self under God's guidance. It was a wonderful idea. But in practice, there was no doubt it could be deeply uncomfortable.” (chapter 10)

“The Beatitudes, which can seem like lofty, almost abstract principles at times, can mean something as simple and as profound as washing one another's feet.” (chapter 17)

Not only does Juliette take four women on a spiritual journey through a Bible study of spiritual disciplines, but she weaves in the gospel and biblical truths as well. She pulls the reader into this journey. Very skillfully creates realistic characters and message.

Lately I’ve struggled with doubts and fear related to my faith. My mother suggested this book to me, not knowing the full extent of my concern, and I found I related to the characters—especially Rachel—so much. The sense of being terrified but wanting to trust God even through the struggle is one I know well. This book brought reassurance and lifted my spirits, prompting me to spend more time in the Word and trust the unchanging truth I find there.

Megan leads the group, with three other women. She encourages interaction within the group, but not beyond the group. She has led study groups before, but is having some issues of her own, which she is initially reluctant to share. They all grow closer; by working through their lessons each week. It is a well-written book, and I found myself laughing sometimes or crying, at other times. This is a good book, with great characters, and I recommend it!
